Timeliner vs Metricool

A strong, cheap social scheduler and analytics tool. It starts where your production pipeline ends.

Honest comparison for a 5-editor video agency. We list what they do better, where they fall short for our ICP, and the real monthly cost.

Short answer

Metricool is $67/mo for a 5-seat video team (Advanced - up to 15 brands ($53/mo billed annually)). Timeliner is $199/mo (Agency - 10 seats, 8TB, content calendar + full pipeline), with extra seats at $10/mo and free unlimited client and guest reviewers on every plan.

Pick Metricool if…

If you are a social-first agency that mostly schedules and reports on content you did not edit yourself - or you need X, Pinterest, Threads or serious social listening and competitor benchmarking - Metricool is the better tool and costs a fraction of a production platform. The trade only makes sense the other way when video production is the actual work and publishing is its last step.

Pick Timeliner if…

You need what Metricool leaves out:

  • No video review at all - no player, no timecoded comments, no drawings, no voice notes. Metricool begins at a finished file.
  • No version history or side-by-side version comparison, so there is no record of what changed between V2 and V3.
  • No production pipeline - no tasks, no kanban, no editor assignment, no deadlines, no workload or capacity view.

Agency - 10 seats, 8TB, content calendar + full pipeline

Why the gap matters: This is not a like-for-like price and we won't pretend it is: as a pure scheduler Metricool is far cheaper, and if scheduling is all you need it is the better buy. The comparison only tilts when you count the rest of the stack. Metricool Advanced ($67/mo) is the tier agencies actually need - it's where post approval and role management start - and it still requires a separate review tool and a separate PM tool on top. Frame.io Pro ($75/mo for 5 members) + ClickUp Business ($95/mo for 5) + Metricool Advanced ($67/mo) is about $237/mo on monthly billing - three subscriptions, three logins and three client experiences. Timeliner Agency is $199/mo for 10 seats and does all three jobs on one object. Prices shown are Metricool's published USD rates for monthly billing; Metricool also publishes EUR rates and discounts roughly 22% for annual billing.

Timeliner Studio - $89/mo

5 seats, 3TB, 1080p streaming. Frame-accurate review, the full production pipeline, the internal-then-client approval gate and branded client portals. Right for a small team replacing a review tool plus a PM tool.

Timeliner Agency - $199/mo

10 seats, 8TB, 4K streaming. Everything in Studio plus payment tracking, approval-bottleneck analytics, client intake forms, the social calendar and AI captions, titles and tags. Right once you're billing clients and publishing.

Extra seats are $10/mo each (+250GB). Clients and guest reviewers are free and unlimited on every plan - they never count toward your seat limit. See all plans.

Where Metricool genuinely wins

We’re not pretending Metricool is bad. These are real strengths - pick Metricool if any of them are central to how you work.

  • Cheaper, by a lot, if scheduling is genuinely all you need - the Starter tier is around $20/mo and the free tier covers one brand.
  • More networks: X/Twitter, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile and Twitch, none of which Timeliner publishes to today.
  • Social listening and competitor benchmarking - track up to 100 competitor profiles and compare your performance against them.
  • Paid-ads reporting alongside organic: Meta, Google and TikTok ad accounts report in the same dashboard.
  • SmartLinks (link-in-bio) - Timeliner has no equivalent.
  • Prices per brand with unmetered team members, so a large team managing few brands is cheap.
  • Looker Studio connector and a public API for piping social data into your own BI stack.

Where it falls short for a 5-editor video agency

  • No video review at all - no player, no timecoded comments, no drawings, no voice notes. Metricool begins at a finished file.
  • No version history or side-by-side version comparison, so there is no record of what changed between V2 and V3.
  • No production pipeline - no tasks, no kanban, no editor assignment, no deadlines, no workload or capacity view.
  • Post approval covers the scheduled post, not the edit: a client can never approve the actual cut inside Metricool, because Metricool never saw it being made.
  • No branded no-login client portal for deliverables - approvals happen inside the tool, not in a client-facing space of your own.
  • No storage for camera originals, RAW or masters, and no per-file size handling - the media library is for post creatives.
  • No payment tracking, per-project profitability, editor cost, or receivables.
  • No internal-then-client review gate, so nothing enforces supervisor sign-off before a client sees work.

The headache you’ll feel

The seam is the export. Your editor finishes a cut, the client approves it somewhere else, and then somebody downloads the file, re-uploads it to Metricool, retypes the caption, and re-checks the thumbnail. Every one of those steps is a chance to publish the wrong version - and Metricool cannot catch it, because it has no idea an approval exists. Agencies running this stack almost all have a story about a rejected cut going live.
